Stony Brook University’s Waste Data and Analysis Center (WDAC) participated in the Federation of New York Solid Waste Conference with Trade Show, held May 19-22, 2024, at the Sagamore Resort. The WDAC team had a table at the trade show and presented their research findings in several conference sessions.

This annual conference is sponsored by the three professional waste management organizations in New York. It brings together government and industry professionals, scientists, and environmental and community organizers to share knowledge and discuss solutions. The WDAC team contributed by presenting their research at conference events and informal conversations across the three days of the trade show.

Monday afternoon, at the “Digging into What We Throw Out” conference section, PhD student Sera Lee discussed how U.S. waste disposal and generation are not necessarily linked to economic growth. Sameena Manzur, another PhD student, shared the results of the 2023 solid waste characterization study for New York State. Dr. Yiyi Wang, a sampling specialist, presented a method for analyzing waste composition patterns across the state.

Also on Monday afternoon, at the “Stewards of the Circular Economy” section, Maeen Md. Khairul Akter, a PhD student, presented research on applying circular economy principles within textile industry supply chains.

Hailey Lee, a recent master’s graduate, presented on composting practices in South Korea and their potential for adaptation in the U.S. Her presentation was on Wednesday morning, part of the “Lettuce Compost Together: Unique Solutions for Biosolids and Food Waste” session.

Dr. David Tonjes, Director of the WDAC, says “This conference is acknowledged as the premier State-level waste industry gathering. It is gratifying that we were able to make five technical presentations at such a prestigious event. The recognition our work is receiving underscores the hard work of all our center professionals, graduate students, and undergraduate students.”

The WDAC’s participation in the conference highlights Stony Brook University’s commitment to sustainable waste management in New York. This continuing research effort contributes to informed policy decisions and the development of a more circular economy.
